Indications : First- and second-degree burns and all other non-infected skin wounds. Erythema secondary to radiotherapy.
Biafine is a trolamine-based skin application. It is widely used to treat superficial and less extensive burns, such as sunburns and domestic burns, or as a post-laser treatment. It also helps heal small, non-infected skin wounds, such as cuts, scratches, pressure sores or tattoos. Finally, Biafine helps reduce the degree of erythema secondary to radiotherapy.
What are the indications for Biafine Emulsion 186 gr?
Biafine is indicated in the following cases:
- Erythema secondary to radiotherapy.
- 1st and 2nd degree burns and all other non-infected skin wounds.
Biafine is to be applied to the skin.
1st-degree burns: Apply a thick layer of Biafine 3 to 4 times a day, until the skin refuses. Gently massage the emulsion into the skin.
In the event of extensive burns, medical advice should be sought.
Secondary erythema, 2nd-degree burns, wounds: follow your doctor's instructions carefully.
Never use Biafine if :
- You are allergic to any component of the emulsion.
- The wound is infected or bleeding.
Carefully consult the full list of special warnings and adverse reactions in the package leaflet.
To avoid drug interactions, always inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are being or have recently been treated with any other medication, even if obtained without a prescription.
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, never use Biafine without first consulting your doctor.

Burns are considered acute wounds. Their origins can be thermal, chemical or electrical. They are classified into 3 types of severity.
- First-degree burns are considered superficial. They are generally simply reddened, with no blistering. Pain may persist for several days, and subsides after 4 to 5 days.
- Second-degree burns are also relatively superficial. But others can be deep. A superficial burn can be recognized by the appearance of blisters filled with a transparent liquid. If the burn is deep, pierced blisters can be seen. The dermis is discolored and the pain is not intense. Note that the absence of pain is not a good sign if your burn has blisters. Both types of burn require 2 to 3 weeks to heal.
- with third-degree burns, the epidermis, dermis and hypodermis are destroyed. The burn is then very deep, and can even reach muscles and bones. The skin is hard and cardboard-like. It is important that this type of injury be treated by a health professional.
What are the right reflexes in the event of injury?
If the burn is superficial, make sure you run it under warm running water for about 15 minutes. This may seem a harmless gesture, but it will prevent the injury from worsening. If your injury is the result of a large heat source (fire, oven, oil, boiling water), immerse the burned area in cold water for around 15 minutes.
If your burn has blisters, don't pierce them, as this could lead to infection. You can then disinfect the wound and create a moist environment to facilitate healing. An ointment such as Biafine is highly recommended to maintain this environment.
After disinfecting the burn, you need to create a moist environment to help the wound heal more easily. To achieve this, use a moisturizing ointment suitable for burns. Apply a thin layer several times a day. A bandage is not necessary when the burn is superficial, but you can apply a compress with apple to protect it and your clothes from the grease of the ointment.
If your wound shows signs of bleeding, debris or infection, seek prompt medical attention.
