DANDRUFF
Dandruff and itching are caused by an abnormal activation of the skin cells of the scalp. At present, scientific research does not explain why some people are prone to dandruff and others are not. However, laboratories have developed particularly effective treatments for dandruff.
THE MOST COMMON ARE DRY DANDRUFF.
They come off spontaneously and are usually found on the shoulders and upper back of clothing. Some of these are caused by pytiriasis, but others are simply caused by a dry scalp. In this case, the scalp has a lack of sebum, causing the skin to "crack". If in doubt, ask your pharmacist or other specialist who can diagnose dandruff due to pytiriasis (the dandruff is smaller and does not have the same appearance). A diagnosis is important in order to know what type of treatment to buy. Indeed, on dandruff due to pytiriasis, classic anti-dandruff shampoos have no effect.
OILY DANDRUFF
Oily dandruff usually occurs on scalps that are too oily. It remains attached to the scalp in patches. These patches, trapped in the seborrhea, are a breeding ground for bacteria, often causing irritation and severe itching. Be careful! Oily dandruff should not be confused with psoriasis of the scalp or with seborrheic dermatitis, which are much more disabling disorders.
CAN HAIR LOSS BE CAUSED BY DANDRUFF?
Dandruff, whether dry or greasy, can be an aggravating symptom of hair loss, but it is not the cause! Dandruff does not prevent the roots from breathing or the hair from growing. If you feel that your hair loss is too severe, we recommend that you read our file on hair loss.
THE APPEARANCE OF DANDRUFF
The appearance of dandruff can be caused by various internal or external factors. Internal factors: - Stress - Infection, fever - Hormonal imbalance - In women: approaching menstruation and/or heavy menstruation - Excessive sweating - Problems with digestive assimilation - Diet that is too acidic EXTERNAL FACTORS - Shampoos that are too aggressive for the scalp. - Hasty rinsing. Indeed, the washing agents of shampoos that are not rinsed well remain in contact with the skin, constituting a permanent aggression of the scalp. - Water that is too hard or too hot - "Hard" brushing (avoid hair dryers that are too hot) - Permanent colouring, straightening - Intensive use of styling products (gels or lacquers). This dries and irritates the skin.
MY PHARMACIST'S RECOMMENDATIONS
Choose an anti-dandruff treatment containing at least one of these three active ingredients: The antifungal which reduces the number of fungi (Zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide) The anti-proliferative. Its objective is not to destroy the fungus directly but to slow down the abnormal production of dermal cells (coal tar). Keratolytic. It breaks down the links between the cells. Its objective is that the dead cells reaching the outside of the scalp are split up and no longer in scaly blocks (sulfur, salicylic acid).
