HOW TO USE RED BETADINE?

HYGIENIC HAND WASHING

Betadine scrub is used pure on wet hands by pouring about 4 ml of product. Then rub for 1 minute and rinse thoroughly with water.

HAND WASHING BEFORE SURGERY

The same procedure as for simple hand washing should be followed, but the entire protocol should be repeated for 3 to 5 minutes, both on the hands and on the forearms.

WASHING OF SOILED WOUNDS

The foaming Betadine solution should be diluted to one third and the antiseptic rinsed thoroughly.

BEFORE AN OPERATION

In order to prepare a patient before a surgical operation, the whole body and hair should be washed less than 2 hours before the operation with 60 ml of red Betadine (half a bottle).

This operation will be carried out in 4 steps:

  • Rub the head and hair with 10 ml of Betadine until the foam is discoloured. Do not rinse immediately.
  • Repeat the operation on the trunk and upper limbs, insisting on the armpits. Wait to rinse.
  • Repeat with the lower limbs and genitals, insisting on the folds and creases.
  • Rinse abundantly the whole body.
  • Repeat the washing operations in the order then dry yourself with a clean towel and put on clean clothes.

CONTRA-INDICATIONS OF BETADINE SCRUB?

Red Betadine cannot be used to disinfect equipment. It must not be associated with other disinfecting products, in particular those derived from mercury. Foaming Betadine should not be used on infants under 1 month old and only on medical advice before the age of 30 months.

BETADINE AND IODINE ALLERGY

Only allergy to povidone constitutes a contraindication to the use of Betadine scrub. Anaphylactic reactions to seafood or iodinated contrast media do not cause cross-allergies and therefore do not prevent the use of this medication.

PREGNANCY AND RED BETADINE

Its use is prohibited for repeated use, from the 2nd trimester of pregnancy onwards, due to the presence of iodine. Occasional use should only be considered on the advice of your doctor. The same restrictions apply in case of breastfeeding.

PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

On injured or fragile skin and in case of repeated applications, there is a risk of iodine passing into the bloodstream. One should therefore be careful when using it on patients with severe burns and renal insufficiency.
