Normacol adult enema is a laxative used in preparation for radiological and endoscopic examinations of the rectosigmoid and in the symptomatic treatment of lower constipation. It is a treatment for occasional use
The active ingredients are sodium dihydrogen phosphate dihydrate (23.66 g) and sodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate (10.40 g).
The excipients of Normacol Enema are sodium methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E219) and sorbic acid.
Other components are: hydrolyzed sterculia gum, sorbic acid, sodium methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E219), purified water.
In cases of constipation, an enema five to twenty minutes before the time chosen for exoneration is advised.
In preparation for endoscopic or radiological examinations you should do an enema the night before and one the day of the examination.
The solution is presented in the form of a single-dose bottle of 130 ml, a flexible plastic container used as a bulb and fitted with a lubricated rectal cannula. The product is to be administered rectally
To administer Normacol Enema, you need to remove the coloured protective cap covering the lubricated cannula by simply pressing it. Then gently insert the cannula into the anal orifice and inject the liquid into the rectal ampulla by gradually squeezing the body of the container. When administering the enema, the subject may lie on his or her back or side and should remain in the same position until the need to evacuate arises, i.e., for 2 to 5 minutes later.
Normacol enema is contraindicated in case of known hypersensitivity to this drug or to any of its components, for children under 15 years of age, in case of hydroelectrolytic disorders with sodium retention, in patients with intestinal obstruction or severe renal failure, or in case of megacolon (congenital or acquired).
This medicine is not recommended in case of hemorrhoidal attacks, anal fissures, or ulcerative colitis
Normacol Enema should be used with caution in elderly or frail patients, patients with chronic mild to moderate renal insufficiency, or heart failure, or patients on a strict deiodized diet, as there is a risk of electrolyte disturbances. These patients should drink well during treatment.
If you are taking or have recently taken any other medication, even if obtained without a prescription, you should inform your doctor or pharmacist.
Normacol adult enema should be used with caution in patients who are on other hypokalemic drugs, digitalis, or drugs that may cause torsades de pointes or other drugs that may affect electrolyte levels, as hyperphosphatemia, hypocalcemia, hypernatremic dehydration and acidosis may occur.
Prolonged or repeated use is not recommended. Because this medication contains sodium methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E219) and may cause allergic reactions. It also contains sorbic acid or one of its salts and may cause local skin reactions such as eczema
It is therefore used in cases of occasional constipation, which may be related to a recent change in lifestyle such as travel. The drug can be a help in short treatment. Any recent constipation unexplained by a change in lifestyle, any constipation accompanied by pain, fever, swelling of the abdomen should be the subject of a consultation with the doctor.
Hygienic and dietary advice is important, such as favouring a diet rich in vegetable products (green vegetables, raw vegetables, wholemeal bread, fruit, etc.), increasing the consumption of water and fruit juices, increasing physical activity (sport, walking, etc.), re-educating the defecation reflex, and sometimes adding bran to the diet.
Chronic constipation is linked either to an intestinal disease that needs to be treated by a doctor, or to an imbalance in the intestinal function due to eating habits and lifestyle. In this case, you should consult your doctor.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medication.
