BIOLOGY OF THE MULTIDRUG SALIVA TEST
This saliva test detects recent use of several drugs: cannabis (THC), opiates, amphetamines and cocaine. Δ9-THC is the main psychoactive component of cannabis. After consumption, it appears in this form in saliva. Cannabis use can lead to central nervous system disorders, impairing sensory perception, coordination and memory. Opiates are used as analgesics in medicine and also as narcotics for their euphoric action.
Side effects include nausea, vomiting and disruption of the sleep cycle. Amphetamines are psychostimulants, used illegally in festive, professional and sporting circles to reduce pain, fatigue and hunger, and prolong alertness and physical endurance. Side effects include depression, anxiety, confusion, sleep disorders and cardiovascular problems. Cocaine is a powerful central nervous system stimulant. Extracted from coca leaves, cocaine was originally used as a painkiller. In the short term, cocaine has a brief, intense euphoric effect, followed by profound depression. In the long term, cocaine damages the heart, kidneys, brain and lungs.
EPIDEMIOLOGY OF MULTIDRUG SALIVA TESTING
After alcohol and tobacco, cannabis is the most widely used psychoactive substance in France, with 5 million users a year. The fourth most widely used substance is cocaine, with 600,000 users a year. Amphetamine use is more widespread in festive environments, and in 2017, concerned 2.3% of 17-year-olds over the course of their lives. In 2017, 24,400 people were hospitalized (including in psychiatric hospitals and in follow-up and rehabilitation care) with an associated or related principal diagnosis of behavioral disorders linked to opiate use. 8% of road safety offenses are due to drug use.
PRINCIPLE OF THE MULTIDRUG SALIVA TEST
The Multidrogue test is a rapid chromatographic immunoassay for the detection of 4 types of drug in saliva.
- cannabis at a threshold of 15 ng/mL (Δ9 -THC)
- cocaine at a threshold of 40 ng/mL
- amphetamines at a threshold of 50 ng/mL
- opiates at a threshold of 20 ng/mL
Characteristics:
- Law enforcement (police and gendarmerie) compliant detection threshold
- 96% reliability
- Results from 2 minutes
- THC detection threshold 15 or 50ng/mL
- Collector with saliva indicator
- Council of State approved
- CE N°394178 du 05/12/16
- Confidentiality respected: drug correspondence not displayed
OBJECTIVE OF THE MULTIDRUG SALIVA TEST
The aim of the test is to obtain an indication of recent consumption of different drugs. Detection times for the multi-drug test depend on a number of factors, including dose. On average, cannabis can be detected up to 12 hours by occasional users, and up to 24 hours by regular users. Cocaine is detectable from 1h to 21h. Amphetamines are detectable from 10 minutes to 72 hours. Opiates are detectable from 10 minutes to 24 hours.
The multi-drug test is not a tool enabling users to avoid police checks. As drug use, unlike alcohol, is prohibited in France, Gendarmerie tests detect "the slightest trace". The driver would be liable to severe criminal penalties.
WHO TO RECOMMEND THE MULTIDRUG SALIVA TEST TO
Consumers wishing to assess themselves, to become aware of the persistence of drugs in their bodies over time, and therefore of the risks involved in driving or working in high-risk jobs.
Those around them, to assess the reality of drug use and initiate a preventive dialogue.
